What surfaces is this suction cup compatible with?
Suction cups work by creating a vacuum, so they require an extremely smooth surface. If the surface is textured at all air can get in and the suction cup with loose grip. Suction cup mounts work best against windows and highly polished metal surfaces.

I noticed my phone can rotate back and forth when it is in the X-Grip. Is that normal?
That type of movement is totally normal for the X-Grip. When being used for less rugged applications the small amount of movement allowed is not an issue, but sometimes when traveling at higher speeds or in bumpy environments it can be. If that is causing problems in your application, it is best to use the safety tether which will prevent that type of movement by creating tension between the phone and backplate.

Will the suction cup hold up to use in a 4×4 on highly corrugated roads or very bumpy roads (context is East Africa)? What would be the best mount to get for this context?
If it only holding a small handheld device like a phone, and as long as the surface is thoroughly cleaned before applying the suction, the single suction should work fine.
